The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank

The Food 4 Kids Backpack Program targets chronically hungry children in San Diego County by working in public schools where at least 80% of the children receive government-sponsored free meals during the school week, but have no such provisions over weekends.

Of the 483,000 individuals in San Diego County identified as “at risk for hunger,” 185,000 are children under 12.

Nutrition affects a child's cognitive, social, and emotional development. Children who do not get the nutritious food their bodies need are more likely to have problems learning, growing, and interacting with their teachers and peers.

The Food Bank worked with school principals, counselors, teachers, parents, and dedicated volunteer leaders to initiate the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program in 2008 by targeting 75 needy children in two of our poorest institutions.

This past year (2011-2012), the program served 1,150 children in 29 schools. This year (2012-2013) we will serve 1,275 children in 30 schools.

The Food Bank works with 10 different schools districts. The furthest school is in Potrero “Potrero Elementary”  where 50 children are served each week.

Of the children participating in the program, many told staff they didn’t have food in the home to eat.
