A little Jaynes History: Jaynes Gastropub began on Valentine’s Day evening in 2007. There was no soft opening, just right on into the insanity of the restaurant business. It was an incredible night and we still see many guests from that opening shift.
Rewind just a few years…Liverpool native Jayne Battle had relocated from San Francisco where she had spent 10 years in the restaurant and bar industry. Missing many of her beloved haunts in the bay (Zuni, Zarzuela, Fog City Diner r.i.p.) and feeling a desire to make her own mark, she decided that it was time to channel her experiences within her own business.
On a trip back to England in 2000, Jayne had discovered something new happening in the pub world called the “Gastropub”. A Gastropub is essentially a British Pub AKA Public House with a much improved kitchen and menu. Having literally grown up in pubs back in England (her parents managed several famous Scouser pubs including the Shipperies and the Crocodile) and having fallen so deeply in love with fine cuisine in SF, starting a Gastropub seemed pre-destined.
Now dreaming of your own restaurant and making it happen is another thing. Fortunately Jayne’s husband Jon had experience in restaurant design as well as building experience from his days in Berkeley and created everything that you see here today from the custom millwork, zinc bar, mosaic tile floor all the way up to the 1920′s tin ceiling.
In true Gastropub form Jaynes serves an eclectic menu including many English Classics such as Bangers and Mash, Fish and Chips, and Lamb Shepherd’s Pie. We are proud to use local organic produce, humanely bred meats, poultry and sustainable seafood. Stylistically the food is rustic. Jayne always says that “she loves things the most that are manipulated the least.” But perhaps most important to the Jaynes winning recipe is our kitchen staff that can channel Jaynes vision consistently, night after night.
A few menu highlights: Our burger The Jayne Burger is much beloved and was recently voted San Diego’s Best Burger by Sunset Magazine. Our Spanish classic Gambas Al Aljillo could rival the best from Barcelona and our Wiener Schnitzel and Spaetzle special packs the house for good reason. Jaynes always has a good variety of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options and children of any age are most welcome. There is something for the most cautious or adventurous jr. Jaynes diner.
Jaynes is proud to have one of San Diego’s most cutting edge wine lists. Natural, orange, high acid, geeky stuff? Absolutely. Something with a bit of age and properly stored at a decent price? We’ve got it. Rose? How about some Tempier. Burgundy, Piedmont, Bordeaux, Rioja, Willamette, Sonoma, Slovenia… Please feel free to ask your server or Jon and Jayne for help finding a great bottle of wine. It is something we are very proud of. Our cocktail program is outstanding and we feature a wide variety of local and international beers on tap and bottle.
We look forward to serving you!
